Cradle Headstall

The Cradle Headstall distributes the pressure away from the mouth makes all horses generally feel less defensive, more comfortable, more trusting and therefore more open to communication because they're not being so bothered in the mouth.

NOTE: This item does NOT include the Cradle Bit or Reins

The Cradle Headstall Sizes are:

Pony: (40"-43")

Regular: (43"-46")

Large: (46"-49")

XL: (49"-52")

Please note that normal bridles are usually too large for the Cradle Bit because it’s design comes up the side, more so than a snaffle bridle.

Cradle Bit C1

In researching the effect of tongue release vs tongue contact on different Horsenalities, we found that the Right Brain horses prefer tongue contact and Left Brain horses prefer tongue release.

If you have a Right Brain Extrovert that has moderate to extreme tendencies when you ride them, the C1 will be the best. They will enjoy the support the tongue contact gives them.

Too much tongue release on this kind of horse makes them unsteady and they have a tendency to raise their heads more. The tongue support is more comforting for them, whereas tongue release tends to make them feel 'lost'.

Cradle Bit C2

In researching the effect of tongue release vs. tongue contact on different Horsenalities, we found that the Right Brain horses prefer tongue contact and Left Brain horses prefer tongue release.

If your Right Brain Extrovert is now more centred and more advanced, then the C2 will be best. It offers a combination of tongue release and tongue contact.

Right Brain Introverts fit in this C2 category also because of their hesitant nature. The tongue release gives them some invitation to come forward and yet it still gives them some support and emotional comfort.

Cradle Bit C3

In researching the effect of tongue release vs. tongue contact on different Horsenalities, we found that the Right Brain horses prefer tongue contact and Left Brain horses prefer tongue release.

If you have a Left Brain horse, you will need the maximum tongue release of the C3.

The Left Brain Introvert is not a very forward-going horse and tends to feel trapped when the bit applies pressure to their tongue. As soon as you give them tongue release, they feel more free to go forward, they are less inclined to overflex, and their mouths are much more comfortable and quiet.

When the Left Brain Extrovert feels tongue pressure they will tend to pull it back or hold their mouth open to avoid it.

Sweet Iron Snaffle

As you and your horse start to enjoy more Positive Reflexes together, you and he will want to be able to communicate with more refinement. This is when the snaffle becomes a valuable tool. When you no longer need a bit for control you can choose it for more sensitive and precise communication.

Pat recommends a loose ring, sweet iron snaffle bit that is not too thin (which is uncomfortable) and not too thick (which invites the horse to lean or push on it). It's just the right thickness to sit comfortably in the horse's mouth and deliver your communication accurately. The snaffle bit Pat recommends also has small ball bearings where it connects to the rings which prevent pinching because it pushes the lips away from the ring.

The reason Pat recommend sweet iron is because a bit that rusts seems to be much more palatable to a horse than a piece of inert iron like stainless steel. Horses really like to lick rust; you may have seen them lick rusty pipe fencing and hitching rails.

The Natural fit for the Snaffle: Forget the one, two and three wrinkle theory. The snaffle bit should fit like your underwear... loose and comfortable! Lower the bit in your horse's mouth until it does not pull at his lips. It is better to have it hung low as this causes the horse to pick it up and suck on it, holding it in place. He'll then hold it in the position that is just right for him and keep his mouth closed.
